Creating A New Generation Of Teachers From Within An Old Paradigm (Can We Possibly Succeed?)
Re: “Teachers need to keep building their capacity in order to be better classroom facilitators.“ We fully agree, but where is the Government Policy and Support to enable them to achieve these goals nationally? Are School Buildings “Safe” and Conducive for achieving Effective Learning? Are there sufficient Facilities In The Schools to Enable Basic Teaching Programs? Are there systems in place to ensure School-Based Quality Improvement? Are there “Effective Systems” in place to ensure Collegial Developmet? Are there Enough School Supervisors? Are the School Supervisors Effective? Are School Supervisors ‘Relatively Young’, Enthusiastic, Up-To-Date with Modern Teaching Methodologies and Effective School Management and Accountability Systems? Are they competent to Monitor and Assist with the Implementation of School-Based Management and Contextual Learning (PAKEM)? How Effective is Dinas Pendidikan at Meeting The Needs and Providing Support to the Schools at the Regional Level? We are currently training about 35 public school English teachers (from different schools) in Jakarta at the moment and it is exciting watching them learn so many new things about teaching using basic contextual learning practices and appropriate technology. One serious obstacle that we are also trying to address is the limitations placed on creativity by the culture in their schools. We are now trying some new strategies to assist them in achieving some freedom in their classrooms. The culture in our schools greatly opposes any attempts by teachers who want to be creative. With the relatively Poor Working Conditions and Salaries that we believe are not appropriate to the Importance Of Their Role In Education, can we really hope for the level of professionalism that is required to achieve the necessary goals? Shouldn’t we just be grateful that they even come to school at all? Let’s work on overcoming the basic (key) education issues before we drop all the responsibility for improving education quality upon our teachers.
